Update to a new version

Updated 2026-10-113 min read

When we release a new version of a theme, Shopify tells you in your admin. Updating adds the new version as a separate draft with your settings carried over. Your live store doesn’t change until you publish it.

1. Add the update

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. When an update is ready, a notice replaces the version number on the theme. Click it.
  3. Read the release notes if you like, then click Add to draft themes.

The new version appears in Draft themes as “Updated copy of” followed by the theme’s name. A large theme can take a few minutes.

2. Check what came across

Shopify copies everything you set in the theme editor to the new version:

  • Theme settings.
  • Sections and blocks you added, moved, removed or hid, and their settings.
  • Templates you created.
  • App embeds and app blocks.
  • Text you changed in Edit default theme content.

Code edits are copied only when they don’t clash with the update. The theme card says whether they were included. If they weren’t, copy them across by hand.

3. Review and publish

  1. Click Customize on the updated copy and check your main pages: home, a collection, a product and the cart.
  2. Check them on a phone with Preview from the ⋯ menu.
  3. Click Publish when you’re happy. Your old version stays in Draft themes in case you need to go back.
