Choose a preset and set your style in Platter
Platter comes with three presets: Platter, Market and Night. A preset is a starting set of theme settings. This guide explains what each one sets, how to pick one, and where to change fonts and colors afterwards.
1. What the presets change
All three presets use the same sections, templates and fonts. They differ in a few theme settings: Field form, the color schemes, the field colors, Measure label and Kitchen note.
- Platter suits chocolate, baking and confectionery makers. Field form Split, a light grey page, a deep green default field, and the measure label Cacao.
- Market suits coffee roasters and pantry goods sold in sizes and grinds. Field form Shelf, a white page, an ochre default field, and the measure label Altitude.
- Night suits hot sauce, spirits and bold condiment brands. Field form Bleed, a near-black page, a rust default field, and the measure label Heat. It is the only dark preset.
Each preset also has its own sample kitchen note. Replace it with your own; see Product colors and food facts.
2. Field form
Most of the home page is made of product fields: one product on a full-width band of its own color. The field form decides how fields with a packshot are laid out. Find it in the editor under Theme settings → Layout → Field form.
- Split sets the photo beside the facts.
- Bleed runs the photo off the page edge for the full height of the field.
- Shelf puts the product name across the top and stands the packshot between the facts and the buy block.
The field form changes the two packshot compositions, “Photo first, large” and “Photo last, small”. The other compositions look the same in every field form. See Set up your home page in Platter for the compositions.
3. Choose a preset
You choose a preset when you add Platter from the Theme Store. To start from another preset later, add Platter again and choose that preset. It arrives as a new, unpublished theme, so your current theme is not touched.
You can also change those settings by hand. A preset is only those settings, so changing them gives you the same result.
4. Fonts
Go to Theme settings → Typography.
- Heading font sets product names, numbers and headings. A wide, heavy face suits Platter. All three presets use Unbounded.
- Body font sets everything else. All three presets use Mona Sans.
- Heading size scales headings from 80% to 120%.
- Body text size scales body text from 90% to 115%.
Both fonts come from Shopify’s font library, so they load from Shopify and need no upload.
5. Color schemes
Go to Theme settings → Colors. Platter has two color schemes. Each has five colors: Background, Text, Secondary text, Button and Button label.
- Scheme 1 is the page itself. Most sections use it by default, including the header.
- Scheme 2 is the dark strip. The announcement bar and the footer use it by default.
Every section with a Color scheme setting can use either scheme.
6. Field colors
Below the color schemes are three settings for product fields:
- Default field color is used for any product without its own field color.
- Dark field text is used on light fields.
- Light field text is used on dark fields.
You don’t pick the text color per product. Platter picks dark or light text, whichever is easier to read on the field. If neither reaches a contrast ratio of 4.5:1, it uses pure black or white.
Each product’s own field color comes from a metafield. See Product colors and food facts.
7. Logo and layout
- Theme settings → Logo has Logo image, Logo width and Favicon. Without a logo, the header shows your store name in the heading font.
- Theme settings → Layout has Page width and Corner radius, as well as Field form.
