Header, menus and footer in Platter
Platter’s header holds your logo, the main menu, search, the account button and the bag. Above it sits an announcement bar. The footer has a newsletter sign-up, up to three blocks of text or links, and the country and language selectors.
1. The header section
In the editor, select Header. Its settings are:
- Menu, the menu shown in the header. The default is your main menu.
- Customer account menu, the links in the account sheet. See step 4.
- Keep header at the top while scrolling, on by default.
- Color scheme.
The logo is set in Theme settings → Logo. Without a logo, the header shows your store name.
2. Product menus and plain menus
Platter shows each top-level menu item in one of three ways, based on the links under it:
- No links under it: a plain link.
- Links under it, and at least one points at a product or a collection: a full-width product menu.
- Links under it, none of them products or collections: a small dropdown. Its first link is “All” plus the item’s name, which goes to the item’s own link.
The product menu reads like a short price list. Each product link shows the product’s color chip, its name, its measure and its price. Each collection link shows the collection’s color chip, if it has one, and how many products it holds. The item’s name sits beside the list, with a View all link to the item’s own link.
To build a product menu:
- Go to Content → Menus in Shopify admin. On some stores this is Online Store → Navigation.
- Open the main menu and add a top-level item, for example “Shop”, linked to a collection.
- Add links under it and point each one at a product or a collection.
- Save.
On phones, the menu opens as a drawer from the side. Links under each item are listed below it, and product links keep their color chip.
3. Search
With Theme settings → Search → Show results while typing on, the search icon opens a search box and results appear as the shopper types. They include products, recipes and articles, and pages. With the setting off, the icon goes to the search page.
4. Account
The account button shows when customer accounts are turned on in Settings → Customer accounts. Platter uses Shopify’s own account component. Signed-out shoppers see the account icon and can sign in. Signed-in customers get an account sheet with links.
The links in that sheet come from the header’s Customer account menu setting. The default is Shopify’s customer account main menu. To change the links, edit that menu in Content → Menus, or pick another menu in the setting.
On phones, an Account link also shows at the bottom of the menu drawer.
5. Announcement bar
The Announcement section sits above the header. Its settings are:
- Text, one short line, for example a shipping note.
- More detail, a second line after the first. It is hidden on phones.
- Link, which makes the text a link.
- Color scheme. The default is Scheme 2.
Clear the Text to hide the bar.
6. Footer
Select Footer in the editor. Its settings are:
- Newsletter heading and Newsletter text. Sign-ups are saved as customers in Shopify admin, tagged “newsletter”.
- Show country/region selector and Show language selector. A selector shows only when your store has more than one country or language.
- Show Follow on Shop. The button shows when Shop Pay is on and your store can be followed in the Shop app.
- Show payment icons.
- Show Powered by Shopify, off by default.
- Color scheme. The default is Scheme 2.
The footer takes up to three blocks:
- Text, with a heading and a short text, for example your shipping days.
- Menu, which lists a menu’s links under the menu’s title. The default is the footer menu.
7. Social links
Add your profile links in Theme settings → Social media. Platter has fields for Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook and YouTube. Each filled-in link shows as an icon in the footer.
