Add languages
Reel’s storefront text comes in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. That covers every word the theme writes itself: buttons, the bag, filters, form labels and messages. The theme editor’s settings come in the same five languages. Your own content, such as product descriptions and the text you type into sections, you translate yourself.
1. Add a language to your store
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Languages.
- Click Add language and choose French, German, Italian or Spanish.
- Click Publish next to the new language when you’re ready for shoppers to see it.
- If your store uses markets, check that the language is turned on for the markets that should get it.
Reel’s text appears in the new language straight away. You don’t need to install anything for it.
2. Translate your own content
Products, collections, pages, blog posts, menus and the words you type into sections stay in the language you wrote them in. Translate them with Shopify’s free Translate & Adapt app, or with another translation app.
3. Let shoppers switch
Reel shows a language selector when your store has more than one published language:
- In the footer, when Show country and language selectors is ticked in the Footer section.
- At the foot of the menu sheet on phones and tablets.
Each language is listed in its own name, for example Deutsch and Français. The same place shows a country selector when you sell in more than one country.
4. Change Reel’s wording
To change a word Reel uses, in any language, go to Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Edit default theme content. Pick the language at the top, search for the text, and type your own. For example, you can rename the bag to cart.
