Subscriptions in Platter
Platter shows subscriptions next to the one-time price, with the saving in plain numbers. It works with Shopify selling plans, so you can use Shopify’s own Subscriptions app or any subscription app built on selling plans. Platter has no subscription settings of its own. The plans, prices and discounts all come from your app.
1. Set up plans in your subscription app
- Install a subscription app that uses Shopify selling plans.
- In the app, create a plan, for example “Every month, 10% off”.
- Add products to the plan.
The plan’s name and description are what shoppers see, so write them for shoppers. “Every month” reads better than an internal code.
2. What shoppers see on the product page
A product with plans shows a choice under the price:
- One-time, at the normal price.
- One option per plan, with the plan’s name, its description if it has one, and its price.
When the shopper picks a plan, the headline price changes to the plan price. If the plan costs less, the one-time price shows struck through beside it, so the saving is clear. The choice follows the selected size or grind.
In the bag, each subscription line shows its plan name.
3. Collection and search rows
Rows don’t show the plan choice. A product that sells one-time and on a plan shows a short line under its price, such as “Subscription: Every month”. The shopper picks the plan on the product page.
4. Products sold only on a subscription
Some products only make sense as a subscription, such as a monthly club box. Set the product to sell only with its purchase options. Most subscription apps have this setting, and Shopify admin shows it on the product page.
For these products, Platter:
- leaves out the One-time option and selects the first plan
- lists the product at its plan price everywhere: rows, the range index, the mega menu and search
- shows a Choose options button in rows instead of Add to bag, so the shopper sees the plan before buying
5. The Subscription section on the home page
The Subscription section features one subscription product. Add it from the editor, then:
- Set Subscription product to a product with a selling plan.
- Add an Image.
- Set Heading, Text, Price suffix and Button label. The defaults are written for a chocolate club called Bar Club, so change them.
The section shows the price of the product’s first plan, followed by your price suffix, for example “a month”. If that plan costs less than buying once, it adds a line such as “Instead of $36. You save 10%.” The percentage is rounded down.
For a product that also sells one-time, the section starts on the first plan, so the button adds the subscription. The shopper can still switch to One-time before adding it.
6. Pre-orders
Platter treats a product as a pre-order when it sells only on plans and none of those plans repeat. Its button reads “Pre-order” instead of “Add to bag”. See Pre-orders, stock lines and the age check.
